Chandler, AZ has the distinction of being named after the first veterinary surgeon to live in the Arizona Territory, Dr. Alexander John Chandler. In 1891 Dr. Chandler lived on a ranch at the south end of Mesa, A -- by the year 1900 he was completing plans for the townsite known as Chandler Ranch. In 1912 the town got its first high school, and built its first hotel in 1913, the Hotel San Marcos, an anchor for the town center. Chandler’s city and economy stayed mostly close and small until the founding of Williams Air Force Base, in 1941, after which the population growth was at first slow, but steady. Today’s Chandler acts as both a suburban community to Phoenix and the home of core communications and tech industries.
